Troxel Introduces The First Traditional, Derby-Styled Protective Helmet
Horse Tack - Riding Helmets
When Jeanne Morrison, a competitive Tennessee Walker equestrian and nursing professor suffered a serious head injury while riding in 1999, she vowed to make the sport she's passionate about safer. Determined to create a protective helmet in the style of the classic fur derby hat worn in the show ring, she approached Troxel, the world's leading manufacturer of ASTM/SEI certified equestrian helmets based on Troxel's technology leadership and outstanding safety record.
This partnership now culminates with the announcement of the new Troxel Derby, the first protective headgear to integrate contemporary fashion and head protection into a classic, creased-brim derby hat that provides ASTM/SEI certified protection. The Derby is composed of two, separable elements - a protective helmet and a covering in the style of a black fur derby hat. Engineered to create the elegant silhouette of the traditional derby, the hat covers an ABS helmet shell, impact absorbing Styrofoam and nylon straps covered in all weather, Pittards X100 leather. The hat is composed of the finest quality 8X fur to ensure elegance, shape-ability and weather durability. It comes shaped to the styling found in Tennessee Walker and other saddleseat riding disciplines. The brim may be custom shaped. Custom Derbys in colors, or with varied features like feathers and ribbons are available and expand its use to disciplines such as dressage and driving. The underlying helmet meets ASTM standard with or without its fur hat.
"After my injury and seeing others in riding accidents, I felt the saddleseat community needed a fashionable protective helmet to reduce the risk of injury and death in accidents," said Morrison. "Troxel has an undisputed reputation for excellence and commitment to public health and equestrian safety, and was the logical choice for a research partnership. I am delighted with the result after two years of development. Seeing a rider in the arena with this protective Derby, it's difficult to tell the difference between a traditional non-protective derby hat and this Derby, apart from its straps and buckle."
Dr Richard Timms, CEO of Troxel, stated, "We were honored to receive a grant from Jeanne to co-develop this unique helmet. I applaud her vision and the contribution she has made to her segment of the equestrian community which now has an option for head protection when competing."
Studies show that equestrian riding has one of the highest rates of head injury per minute as compared to all other recreational sports. A fall from six feet can fracture a human skull, independent of forward speed. A horse's reactions can be unpredictable even in controlled environments. Riders are at risk regardless of riding recreationally or competitively.
The 2005 Troxel Derby is available in black fur sized up to 7 ¼. It can be purchased from authorized retailers and catalogs at a suggested retail price of $399.99. The Derby may be customized. See your authorized dealer or www.troxelhelmets.com for custom options.
