Troxel Derby Wearers Win World Championships at TWHNC
A record crowd of 30,000 were treated to one of the most exciting competitions at this year’s 68th Annual Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration in Shelbyville Tennessee. Fifteen-year-old Mary Morrison of Hattiesburg, MS. riding Watch and Bedazzled was named World Grand Champion in the Owner-Amateur Youth Riders on Walking Mares, Riders 12-17 Years class. Mary won the prestigious event wearing the Troxel Derby helmet, which was created in partnership by Troxel with Jeanne Morrison, Mary’s mother. Jeanne also won a blue ribbon at Celebration while wearing the Troxel Derby helmet in the Owner-Amateur Riders 50 years and older on Plantation Pleasure Walking Horses, Lite Shod class.
When Jeanne was seriously injured in a riding accident, the doctor told her she would have to wear a protective helmet if she wanted to get back in the show ring. Jeanne started wearing the classic black velvet English style protective helmet, but her dream was to create a helmet resembling the fur derby hat worn in the walking horse show ring. Together Jeanne and Troxel created the Derby, the equestrian industry's first classic-folded, creased-brim Derby that provides ASTM/SEI certified protection. Jeanne and Mary now proudly compete in their Derby helmets while inspiring other saddle seat riders to follow suit.
“I am glad this protective helmet is available. It will give the riders an option, an option of safety,” Jeanne said. “Very few Tennessee Walking Horse riders who show, including children, wear SEI certified helmets. I would like to see all children wearing a helmet."
When Jeanne and Mary went to this year’s Celebration, they were expecting very tough competition from former and current World Grand Champions. “I was in total shock Friday night.” Jeanne said. “When I heard them say Mary’s name I just about died, it’s like winning the Olympics, people don’t realize how big this is and it was even bigger because she was wearing the Troxel Derby helmet. It goes to show that people can compete safely and still win.”
The Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration is heralded as the “World’s Greatest Horse Show,” during which the breed’s World Grand Champion and some 20 World Champions are named. With over 4,000 entries and more than $650,000.00 in prizes and awards, the 11 day elite event is action packed entertainment.
