The original "Sire Lines," published in 1977 by The Blood-Horse and long out of print, holds a valued place in Turf history as the preeminent work on American Thoroughbred pedigrees. Now from Eclipse Press' new imprint, The Blood-Horse Classics Library, comes an updated edition of this important volume. An Oxford graduate and lawyer by trade, author Abram Hewitt took particular interest in equine pedigrees and genetics and wrote on these subjects for The Blood-Horse. From 1973 to 1976 Hewitt penned a series of articles examining the most influential early to mid-20th-century American stallions. These articles were compiled into the original "Sire Lines." Among the 88 stallions profiled are Man o' War and his sons, War Admiral and War Relic; Native Dancer; Triple Crown winner Count Fleet; and the undefeated Ribot. In addition, the "Sire Lines" appendix will be available on CD-ROM. Presented as a PDF file with a searchable index, the appendix lists known stakes winners for the stallions profiled in the book.
Abram Hewitt wrote extensively on Thoroughbred racing and breeding. In addition to "Sire Lines," he authored "The Great Breeders and Their Methods," published in 1982 by The Thoroughbred Record. A New York native, Hewitt died in 1987.
"'Sire Lines' capitalizes on the remarkable career and knowledge of Abram S. Hewitt. The new edition provides historical insight and perspective to today's breeders and has been updated so to be applicable in the 21st century." -- Ed Bowen, author and Turf historian
