Repel-X Brand Fly Control Celebrates 50th Anniversary

When Farnam introduced its first horse product, Repel-X® Fly Control Concentrate, fifty years ago no one could have predicted the brand would become one of the most trusted brands in the perennial fight against flies. “Repel-X did the job — it was that simple,” said Bill Johnson, who retired from Farnam in 2005, after 53 years on the job. “Repel-X works because it repels flies with its odor and also gives the fly a hot foot when it lands on the treated horse.”

Johnson was responsible for introducing Repel-X to horse owners fifty years ago. At the time there was no other effective fly control product that you mixed with water for horses and no other product that could be sprayed down to the point of run-off without harming the horse’s sensitive skin.

“It penetrates better than oil-based products that only go on the surface of the hair, not down to the skin,” Johnson said. “This means it stays on the horse longer.”

In 1993 Farnam began expanding its popular Repel-X brand with the introduction of Repel-X® RTU – a ready-to-use formula. Then in 1994 Repel-X®P Emulsifiable Fly Spray, a new concentrated formula, was introduced. This was followed in 1996 with the introduction of Repel-X® Lotion.

Repel-X RTU is the ready-to-use, water-based formula that kills and repels six fly species, ticks, gnats and mosquitoes. It contains botanically-derived pyrethrins and permethrin and is available in a 32-ounce size with trigger sprayer.

Repel-X®P Emulsifiable Fly Spray provides economical fly protection for horses and ponies. It repels and kills horn, house, stable, horse, and deer flies (tabanids), plus gnats, mosquitoes and ticks – including deer ticks which may transmit Lyme Disease. When mixed with the appropriate ratio of water, a single application keeps pests away for days – for fly control that’s easy on the budget. One pint of the concentrate makes one gallon of fly spray. Repel-XP is available in pints, quarts and gallons.

Repel-X Lotion offers the reliability of Repel-X in a smooth, spreadable lotion. It is excellent for spot treatment around eyes, muzzle, ears and wounds and contains sunscreen and conditioners for healthy skin and coat. The non-greasy formula kills and repels biting flies, filth flies, biting gnats, ticks and lice for five to seven days without collecting dust or dirt. It is available in a convenient 8-ounce flip-top bottle for one-handed application.

“Bill Johnson put his stamp on many of Farnam’s early horse products,” said Chris Jacobi, senior vice-president, Equine Products. “His dedication to develop and market quality horse products at a reasonable price is a legacy we are proud to continue to this day.”

A party to celebrate the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Repel-X brand of fly control products is planned for April 27, 2007 at the Rolex Kentucky 3-Day Event presented by Farnam. The party will begin at 6 p.m. in the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation’s Man o’ War Society Tent. Media and a number of VIPs in the horse world are invited to toast to the continued performance and value of Repel-X, Farnam’s most senior horse product.

With five decades of expertise in the perpetual fight against these enemies of all horses and their owners, and products such as Repel-X RTU, Repel-XP and Repel-X Lotion, Farnam is proud to be the provider of the Official Fly Control Products of the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and an official fly control product of the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA).
