Just Chaps? That may be the name of the company, but by no mean are their half chaps ‘just chaps.’ They are fun, stylish and comfortable. Available in styles ranging from funky neoprene colors with heart or horseshoe designs to international flags, combat camouflage, fringed suede or traditional leather, you are sure to find a color combination to fit your style. If not, Just Chaps can customize your chaps and even personalize the straps! Horse Tack Review tested two versions of the Just Chaps Half Chaps, the Neoprene Half Chaps and the Synthetic Suede Half Chaps.
Neoprene Half Chaps
The rider who tested the Neoprene Half Chaps gave them points for the neoprene fabric. She noted that neoprene is a very comfortable fabric, as well as being both durable and functional. The calf pads and trim of the Neoprene Half Chap is made of a synthetic leather to provide additional support where needed. The neoprene provided the right amount of stretch and allowed for minimal break in time. These half chaps were more comfortable to wear over breeches as opposed to jeans, as the stretchy neoprene fabric caused the jeans to bunch and rub under the chaps. If you do prefer to ride in jeans, make sure they fit slimly on your lower leg.
Synthetic Suede Half Chaps
The elastic back panel of the Suede Half Chaps made them very easy to get on. There is no need to “pull, stretch and hold” in place in order to quickly zip as is the case with more traditionally designed half chaps. The test rider’s first impression was that they pinched under the knee. However this was more of a sizing issue and would likely have been resolved if the rider had first tried on the chaps. (The chaps were simply sent for testing.) The rider who tested the synthetic leather chaps is accustomed to riding in leather half chaps so this was a bit of a change for her. The Suede Half Chaps took a few rides to break in, but did so very well. The rider liked the way the suede material provided a better grip, especially since these chaps were brand new. She commented that her leather chaps take a while to break in before gaining some grip. The synthetic suede is softer and more pliable, making it more forgiving and flexible.
After riding in both half chaps for 2 months on a regular basis, the test riders found that neither has stretched beyond their initial snug fit, nor have they been compromised in any way. The zippers and snaps have not been strained and continue to maintain their reliability.
Just Chaps Half Chaps are made with YKK zippers, reinforced foot elastic and security straps at both the top and bottom of the chaps. We would like to note their most important asset – synthetic material is WASHABLE!
The half chaps we tested were priced at $75 and $70 respectively, making them a worthy product for cost conscious and recreational riders. The half chaps are sleek in appearance, comfortable, not to mention stylish. Why not have your half chaps customized in your barn colors? They would make a great gift for your trainer too! Hint Hint!
