The results of a recent study indicate that feeding SUCCEED® Digestive Conditioning Program® prior to and following weaning can have statistically significant effects on weight gain—which is critical in order to achieve optimum growth rates. This research, conducted by Freedom Health, LLC, is the latest study to demonstrate the health benefits horses experience while receiving SUCCEED.
“All horses can experience many benefits from using SUCCEED, but foals are particularly vulnerable to digestive distress,” said Scott Carter, Ph.D., Vice President – Research and Development at Freedom Health. “We had previously shown that the sale price of yearlings increased when they were fed SUCCEED daily for three months, and we were confident that weanling-age foals could attain benefits leading to similar results.”
This study evaluated 187 Standardbred foals, starting at six months of age and concluding at nine months of age. The foals were randomly assigned to a control group and an experimental group that received SUCCEED 10 days prior to weaning and for the three months following weaning. The cumulative weight gain for the SUCCEED-fed weanlings was significantly higher than that of the control group at days 30, 60 and 90 of the experimental period. Weanlings who received SUCCEED gained approximately 50 more pounds per animal compared with the control group at the conclusion of the
study—and none of the SUCCEED-fed weanlings lost weight in the initial days following the stressful weaning event. All weight gains were within the normal range of growth curves for a 1,100 pound to 1,320 pound adult horse, which suggests that feeding SUCCEED will not result in growth rates that contribute to orthopedic diseases.
Blood cortisol levels of both weanling groups were measured at 10 days prior to weaning and two days post-weaning. While the results were not statistically significant, it is worth noting that cortisol levels in the SUCCEED group were numerically lower than those in the control group. Cortisol is a stress hormone that can weaken the equine immune system, among other adverse effects.
As a functional feed™, SUCCEED helps to support the structure and function of the digestive system as weanling horses transition from their mothers’ milk to a diet consisting solely of roughage and grain concentrates. Foals that are able to maintain a healthy body weight are more likely to reach their full growth potential. This is especially critical for potential racehorses and other performance horses—optimal health as a foal gives these horses the best chance to perform the tasks for which they were bred. For breeders, SUCCEED’s effects on overall health and development—both at weaning and beyond—may help to maximize sale prices.
