Mountain Horse Sport Zip Paddock Boots

Horse Tack Review Staff

THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKING….and riding, mucking, even running errands post-barn if necessary! Our testers test drove the Mountain Horse Sport Zip Paddock Boots for approximately two months. These boots have a front-zip closure and retail for $99.95. Mountain Horse offers colors in Black and Mahogany, in whole sizes from 5—11. During the test run, the boots were worn at the barn for every function imaginable including walking, riding and ground chores. They are extremely comfortable in the saddle and on the ground, fantastic. Further, they withstand mud and water exceptionally well. Granted, they were tested in July and August when the ground was more muck than rain-drenched but considering that they were trumped around fields, wash stall, and the occasional downpour, our testers have no complaints with respect to the less than squishy state of their toes.

The Sport Paddock Boots have some noteworthy features including sturdy front zippers, removable insoles and a shock absorbing system to reduce foot fatigue. Although some riders typically go for lace up boots, we highly recommend the zip-up style of these boots for several reasons. The front zipper is made of sturdy brass and the enclosed brochure recommends a prescribed course of care for long-term durability. Further, Mountain Horse offers a zipper replacement guarantee. How can you possibly beat that?

As far as sizing, the Mountain Horse Sport Paddock Boots only come in whole sizes. Both of our testers went up a size and found they were a very generous fit. One tester has an issue with a very wide right foot across the ball but these boots fit comfortably. If you are a half size as our testers were, you will want to try on a pair before ordering to make sure you are comfortable either going up or down for fit. But, if you ride in colder climates, you will not have an issue with respect to squished toes when layering socks in the winter months.

Negatives? The only criticism we could really offer based is the tread. The property in which the boots were tested consists of a lot of hilly, rocky pastures so footing and traction is extremely important. We would recommend some slight detail changes to the tread such as deeper grooves for better mud traction. However, if you’re looking for an all around sturdy, comfortable boot for casual riding and light barn chores, the Mountain Horse Sport Zip Paddock Boot is a well-made, attractive, economical choice!
