AQHA Honors Texan Tom Nicks for Equine Public Service
AQHA Press Release
American Quarter Horse TEXAN TOM NICKS of the Los Angeles Police Department Metropolitan Division Mounted Platoon won the Equine Public Service Award for 2004. This award is designed to honor American Quarter Horses who work in the public service sector.
“We are thrilled to honor an American Quarter Horse that gives so much back to its community,” said AQHA Executive Vice President Bill Brewer. “TEXAN TOM NICKS is most definitely deserving of this title.”
Horses nominated for the award must meet one of the following criteria: have documented meritorious service, been spotlighted by a media outlet, won a national title at a mounted patrol competition, been recognized by a municipal organization, or gone above and beyond to create a safer environment for the public.
TEXAN TOM NICKS, a 1987 bay gelding affectionately called TOM, came to the LAPD in August of 1995 with a great aptitude for police work. TOM’s division of the LAPD works in a wide range of law enforcement activities including crowd control, search and rescue, crime suppression and many community relations functions.
During the past nine years of service, TOM has become known as the best horse in the barn and performs his duties with a quiet and efficient manner. He was part of the 2000 Democratic National Convention and has worked four major anti-war demonstrations. TOM has been to two Lakers victory parades and was also at the 2004 NBA All-Star game. He has worked many festivals, parades and rock concerts along with numerous search and rescue operations. TOM has put in thousands of community service hours at schools, hospitals and churches throughout the Los Angeles area.
Not only has TOM been an asset to his community, he has also helped his fellow officers learn to ride.
“TOM is strong, determined, and a safe partner who is the epitome of a police horse,” said Tom’s trainer, Patrick Kouri. “TOM is said to be a rare and honest horse that knows his job and will take care of the officers while they gain horseback experience.”
As the service award winner TEXAN TOM NICKS received a custom-made Montana Silversmiths buckle mounted on a TexTan breast collar. The Los Angeles Police Department received a framed certificate from AQHA and will be featured in America’s Horse, AQHA’s official member magazine, as well as mentioned on “America’s Horse,” the weekly television program of AQHA airing on the Outdoor Life Network.
