Tight race for the Horsecity.com Summer Season conclusion

With only three events left in the Horsecity.com Summer Season of the Western Horseman Cup the top five positions in the Open and Non-Professional divisions is far from decided. Boon San Kitty, ridden by Eddie Flynn for Walton’s Rocking W Ranch of Mineral Wells, Texas, has a slight lead with 175 points in the Open division. Meanwhile, Skip Queen, of Lipan, TX, has earned 120 points, for a narrow margin over Scott Ferguson of Hempstead, TX, in the Non-Pro ranks.
Inaugurated last year, the Western Horseman Cup features a $250,000-added finals at the Augusta Futurity in January for horses that have qualified by earning points at existing limited age events across the United States and Canada throughout the year. The 2004 championship series encompasses 49 events with nearly $6 million in added money. The series is split into the Quarter Horse News Spring Season, which concluded May 25; the Horsecity.com Summer Season, which runs through September 18; and the Westernhorseman.com Fall Season, which concludes November 13.
The top five Open horses and Non-Pro riders in each of the three seasons will be invited to the Augusta Futurity next January for the final showdown.
Boon San Kitty ridden by Eddie Flynn for Walton’s Rocking W Ranch of Mineral Wells, TX has a slight lead over second place, Cat Ichi. The Quarter Horse News Spring Season winner, Cat Ichi, ridden by Guy Woods for EE Ranches of Texas is currently second in the summer season. Laredo Blue owned by David Plummer of Fruit Heights, UT and ridden by Roger Wagner currently holds onto third place with 85 points.
Presently four horses have 75 points, Aristo Katz owned by Jack and Susan Waggoner of Bridgeport, TX shown by Clint Allen; High Stylish Oak owned and shown by Jason Clark of Aubrey, TX; Jeeps Posi Traction owned by Russ and Janet Westfall of Los Olivos, CA and shown by Russ Westfall; and Steve’s Nurse owned by Kelly Schaar of Goliad, TX and shown by Tag Rice.
The Non-Pro division is equally as close. Skip Queen of Lipan, TX holds the number one position with 120 points, followed closely by Scott Ferguson of Hempstead, TX with 100 points. Ferguson won the Quarter Horse News Spring Season of the Western Horseman Cup with wins at the NCHA World Championship Futurity and the Abilene Spectacular. He also wrapped up the Non-Pro title at the NCHA Summer Cutting Spectacular presented by Emison Insurance and underwritten by the Insurance Corporation of Hannover.
Wesley Galyean of Ardmore, OK and Chad Bushaw of Weatherford, TX are tied with 85 points each. Galyean was second in the Quarter Horse News Spring Season Non-Pro standings. Gayle Karanges of Fort Worth, TX, Lewie H. Wood Jr. of Dennis, TX, and Cindy Smith of Nogul, NM are all tied with 75 points each.
The Horsecity.com Summer Season will wrap up on September 18 with the conclusion of the Idaho Cutting Horse Association Futurity and Aged Event. The final ten contestants will be determined during the Westernhorseman.com Fall Season.
