Tight race for the Horsecity.com Summer Season conclusion

NCHA Press Release

With only three events left in the Horsecity.com Summer Season of the Western Horseman Cup the top five positions in the Open and Non-Professional divisions is far from decided. Boon San Kitty, ridden by Eddie Flynn for Walton’s Rocking W Ranch of Mineral Wells, Texas, has a slight lead with 175 points in the Open division. Meanwhile, Skip Queen, of Lipan, TX, has earned 120 points, for a narrow margin over Scott Ferguson of Hempstead, TX, in the Non-Pro ranks.

Inaugurated last year, the Western Horseman Cup features a $250,000-added finals at the Augusta Futurity in January for horses that have qualified by earning points at existing limited age events across the United States and Canada throughout the year. The 2004 championship series encompasses 49 events with nearly $6 million in added money. The series is split into the Quarter Horse News Spring Season, which concluded May 25; the Horsecity.com Summer Season, which runs through September 18; and the Westernhorseman.com Fall Season, which concludes November 13.

The top five Open horses and Non-Pro riders in each of the three seasons will be invited to the Augusta Futurity next January for the final showdown.

The Quarter Horse News Spring Season winner, Cat Ichi, ridden by Guy Woods for EE Ranches of Texas is currently second in the summer season. Laredo Blue owned by David Plummer of Fruit Heights, UT and ridden by Roger Wagner currently holds onto third place with 85 points.

The Non-Pro division is equally as close. Skip Queen of Lipan, TX holds the number one position with 120 points, followed closely by Scott Ferguson of Hempstead, TX with 100 points. Ferguson won the Quarter Horse News Spring Season of the Western Horseman Cup with wins at the NCHA World Championship Futurity and the Abilene Spectacular. He also wrapped up the Non-Pro title at the NCHA Summer Cutting Spectacular presented by Emison Insurance and underwritten by the Insurance Corporation of Hannover.
