Purchase: After much searching on the internet, primarily on statelinetack.com, I went to my local tack store and purchased the Courbette Magic Close Contact Saddle in havana brown. I also purchased the matching bridle and reins. I paid slightly more than I would have on statelinetack, but I like to support local stores. I paid 700 dollars for the saddle and 120 dollars for the bridle and reins.
Likes: The things that I love most about this saddle and bridle are the colour, comfort, fit, and magic technology. The colour is the lovely rich havana brown that is so appropriate in the hunter show ring. I did not have to oil my saddle to get it to be this colour, and that is nice since too much oiling breaks down leather. I know a lot of judges look down on competitors with saddles and bridles that are too light, as that shows that the saddle has not been properly worked in. It is also incredibly comfortable, with a nice deep, soft seat and air filled knee rolls. The saddle has a wide tree, and fits my arabian better than any saddle I've found. Most close contacts are built for narrow TBs. Finally, the magic leather is wonderful. It is not synthetic, but water does not harm or stain the leather due to a special shield. This is especially nice during the cross country phase of eventing.
Dislikes: This saddle doesn't fit a lot of horses...it is for those with the broadest backs. It would fit any arabian, haflinger, fjord, or quarter horse well.
Quality: It seems very nice. No wear is apparent yet, and I've had it for nearly a year with daily work. The magic technology is working just as it should, as I've schooled through creeks and in rain w/o damaging the leather at all.
Summary: I would recommend this excellent saddle to anyone competing in hunter, jumper, or eventing...especially on a hard to fit, wide-backed horse.
