Purchase: This was purchased at a horse expo for $39.95.
Likes: This solves the problem of feeding hay off the ground to minimize wastage, but also allows horses to eat with their heads down to promote proper digestion and respiratory health. It also has the benefit of being a slow feeder, and it significantly increases the amount of time used to eat the hay. The plastic construction has no sharp edges, and a promotional video shows a horse that has stepped into the slats of a feeder on the ground, and it is easily removed. This also brings up the concern that a horse can get a hoof stuck in it, but the carabiner has a safety release, ensuring the horse will have little chance of injuring himself by getting caught in it.
Dislikes: The plastic design also does not allow for the horses to get the last few pieces of a flake, so my horses spin the rope until it is refilled. This has broken a few carabiners, but the company sent a replacement in the mail. They also do not have a handle, but it is not too difficult to carry it when filled.
Quality: The quality is very good, and although it you have to put ti together before you use it, this is not difficult at all, only involving putting the two halves together and tying the rope to hang is with in its desired location. If you fill this with too much hay, at least in my experience, the hinges may warp the hay may fall out when you are carrying it, it is easily prevented by not putting in too much hay. The carabiners could be a little sturdier, but this is a small issue. They are very durable, mine have been dropped many times, leaving no ill effects.
Summary: I would highly recommend this product. It is both beneficial to your horses' health, and it is very easy to use. Although the price may be a little high for a hay feeder, it is definitely worth it.
