Purchase: I bought this saddle pad at Stagecoach West, Equine Affaire (Springfield, MA), in November, 2010, for $127.50 (discounted show price). I bought it to replace a ventilated non-slip neoprene pad that was causing abrasions to my horse under my saddle.
Likes: The pad is constructed of 100% long fiber wool felt. It is thick and dense with a contoured fit, tight stitching, quality wear leathers on sides and under pommel, and nice 'Bar J' insignia. It's very easy to clean. When the pad is dry, I go over it with a bristle brush and shake or hang inside-out over a rail or line and whack it with a rug beater. I've used this pad for 5 years and it's still in like-new condition. There is no pilling or uneven compression. It does not pull fur out or abrade the way the neoprene did. The wool is washed and non-allergenic for lanolin; naturally anti-microbial.
Dislikes: I wish the pad had another 1/2 inch of drop. My cinch rings come right to the edge. After five years of use, the wear leathers are starting to show signs of use (abrasion and some fading). The felt is very dense and so can be slow to air dry on cool humid days.
Quality: The pad is constructed with a split seam along spine. There's a keyhole cut out under pommel. There's leather covering the top of the spine and front of the keyhole. The quality of material and construction is superb.
Summary: After using this pad for five years, I have only good things to say about it. Best advice I ever got was to go with a 100% wool pad. I could have bought a cheaper felt pad but I could not have bought a _better_ one for the money than the BarJ Wool Felt Pad. Highly recommend.
