Purchase: I bought these half chaps at the Colorado Rocky Mountain Horse Expo for about $30. I got them because half chaps help grip and are so versatile; they look like tall boots so you can do a little bit of showing in them. They also looked like excellent quality for only $30, which was way less than you pay for a lot of suede half chaps.
Likes: I like the stretchy elastic on the sides of these half chaps. They fit comfortably and look great. They have heavy-duty zippers (not like the skinny ones found on other half chaps) and are very easy to put on and take off, unlike half chaps with Velcro straps. Shires half chaps are of very good quality and they have lasted me FOREVER! I've had them for two years, and they're a little bit too short now, but they're still holding up. The reinforcing patch on the inside of the leg of one of the half chaps has separated away from the rest of the leather, but that's to be expected. I have put in a LOT of hours in the saddle with these half chaps: I ride every day in summer and about four times a week during the school year. During the time that I've owned Shires half chaps, my sister has gone through two pairs of more expensive half chaps and they haven't been as high-quality. Shires half chaps are GREAT quality and a really good buy!
Dislikes: I like everything about these half chaps. The inside reinforcement has separated, but that could be fixed if I took them to a tack shop that did leather repairs. Right now they're just my schooling half chaps, and they still look great because when I'm in the saddle you can't tell that the inside is separated. I don't really have any dislikes!
Quality: Shires half chaps are made of strong, quality suede leather and have reinforced stitching. The insides of the half chaps are reinforced with more suede, so they last forever. The zipper is heavy-duty (I believe it's YKK) and has never jammed or broken.
Summary: Shires half chaps are a GREAT buy! They're of wonderful quality, they fit comfortably and well, and they last a long time. They're totally easy-care, and they're WAY cheaper than some of the other, lesser quality half chaps on the market. Highly recommended!
