Manufacturer: Troxel (View all products by Troxel)

Model: Sport Schooling Helmet (View all Sport Schooling Helmet reviews)

Category: English Chaps/Boots/Helmets

Purchase: I bought this helmet at State Line Tack for $30. I'd been riding for years, but my trainer always supplied helmets for her students. When I started taking lessons with a trainer who didn't do that, I needed an affordable, comfortable helmet of my own.

Likes: The Troxel Sport is ASTM/SEI safety certified, of course. It is lightweight and ventilated, making it comfortable on hot summer days. It is fairly easy to adjust by adding or removing pads from the removable head liner. This helmet is an affordable, comfortable way to be safe on horseback. I would never ride without a helmet on.

Dislikes: The Troxel Sport's chin strap can be hard to adjust, in my opinion, and adding and removing pads from the liner is more time-consuming than a dial fit. Of course, this is not a very attractive or streamlined helmet - but as my mom would say, "You're not trying to make a fashion statement." This is a great schooling helmet despite not being as good-looking as the expensive helmets.

Quality: The Troxel Sport comes in black or white and is ASTM/SEI safety certified. It has an adjustable harness strap, removable and washable head liner, and a detachable visor that actually stays on when you want it to (unlike the old Lexington helmets supplied by my first trainer). The quality and construction of this helmet is very good. I've had it for about three years and it has held up perfectly.

Summary: This helmet is comfortable, affordable, quality, and a great buy. No one should ride without a helmet, and this helmet is a great way to stay safe on horseback without spending $60 on a helmet. I am much happier having my own well-fitting safety helmet than constantly adjusting school helmets.
