Purchase: I wanted to learn a little more about how to set up jumps around our field to school in, and was interested in all of the planning that goes into building hunter / jumper courses. I can't remember the exact price, though I bought it for approximately $15.00 Cdn from Victoria Feeds - Horse & Hound in Lindsay, Ontario. Basic Coursebuilding seemed like a fairly simple book with enough information to get me started. Book written by Maureen Summers. Illustrations by Carole Vincer.

Likes: Lots of colourful pictures showing both the right and wrong of coursebuilding. Instead of a book that is purely text, this one illustrates what the author is talking about so you can actually see what you are, or are not, supposed to do. The information is clear enough to understand that it would be suitable for young riders interested in showjumping, yet it doesn't alienate more mature readers either.

Dislikes: It would be nice to see a few pages on simple cross country jumps, to mix up your schooling at home but I understand that building cross country courses is neither basic nor something you can really fit on a few pages. Threshold Picture Guides has some other books that might be right up my alley though: Making your own jumps, Jumping cross country fences and a few more related titles.

Quality: Softcover. 24 pages. Quite informative with good illustrations.

Summary: Perfect for someone interested in the idea of building hunter / jumper courses, though I doubt it would teach a more experienced course builder anything new. Overall though, I'll probably end up getting a few other books from the series.
