Purchase: I bought this at Mary's Tack and Feed in Del Mar because I thought it looked like something that should be in my emergency kit. It cost about $100 for a pair of them.

Likes: This is a really neat system. These are leg wraps, like horse boots, only with crystals enclosed inside of the boot that absorb water. You can submerge them in hot water or cold water, and they can be frozen. I keep one frozen in my freezer at all times for emergencies and one in the horse trailer tack room. They do wonders for reducing swelling, and unlike ice packs you don't have to hold them on. Unlike wet and frozen SMBs, they don't rub the skin under the boot raw.

Dislikes: They don't stay up very well, so I need to vet-wrap them into place. Once they are under vetwrap, they stay just fine. They are not easy to clean, either (I haven't tried just putting them in the wash, because I don't know what that will do to them). They are soft cloth on the inside, which means extra scrubbing, not just hosing off.

Quality: I have not had mine rip yet. They have a soft inside that is cloth, the crystals are in the middle and there is a rubberized mesh on the outside. They velcro into place, but as I mentioned, they don't stay up well without support. They come in a variety of sizes. They are black, and stay hydrated for 2-3 hours or if frozen, stay cool for 6-8 hours. No more changing melty ice packs!

Summary: I am very glad that I have this in my emergency kit. One of those things you've just gotta have. As long as you have the vet wrap to hold them up, no problem at all. As far as I know, there is nothing else like this on the market, and these work so much better than a hose or ice packs. Works well for swellings and laminitis.
