Category: Horsewear

Purchase: I bought three of these on clearance for $40 each through National Bridle Shop. They normally sold for $79 each. At the time I lived in a very northern climate where horses needed to be blanketed 6 months out of the year.

Likes: For $40, they lasted long enough. Although they had bias surcingles, they actually stayed on the horses pretty well. It was a rare day (but usually ill-fated, for the blanket) when the blanket would slip off the horse's back. They were a nice weight if you wanted a medium weight blanket (they were not heavy enough for me so I bought extra under-blankets). I liked that the front closure had the same hardware as was found on the bias surcingles, because this made it easier to put them on and take them off. Of course, your hands got colder from all the metal.

Dislikes: They all eventually gave out. I lost the first one the first year, the second one the second year, and the third one (who was on a horse that never tears blankets) lasted until the fourth year, when she died and I put the blanket on a different horse. It then lasted 2 months. The worst part is not that they tear, for all blankets do, but that when the other horses bit them, they would grab a hold of the blanket and as the other horse would move away, the blanket would tear not just at the site of the horse's mouth but along the entire side of the blanket! I got rips four to five feet long in the blankets, and the chunk of cloth that ripped would pull out! This meant that they were impossible to fix. Also, although they had underside leg straps, these all broke the first year; they were just too lightweight.

Quality: Quilted, medium weight stable blanket. Front closure; this never fitted snug enough to the horse, even when it was adjusted all the way closed there was still a gap. Bias surcingles held up well, but the hind leg straps did not.

Summary: This blanket would probably work well in a situation where it was used on a single, adult horse who didn't destroy blankets and who was stalled and paddocked alone. No good for turn-out; not good when other horses are around the help eat it. I wouldn't spend $80 on it, but at $40 I feel relatively neutral.
