Purchase: I purchased this stand through Valley Vet in July of 2006. I paid $169.95 for the stand and $14.60 for shipping for a total of $184.55. I purchased it because my old horse, 1978 Anglo Arab, found it difficult to hold up his feet and was prone to thrush and my young horse Lanarkshire Warmblood (Clydesdale & Standardbred)was not good about the farriers stand.

Likes: It is easy to keep clean. It is very sturdy and lightweight; my previous stand was steel. It has two magnets to hold my hoof picks, etc. I can adjust it to any height from 14" to 23 1/2", there are no set height increments. Once adjusted the cradle or post stays put even when my draft cross leans on it. I never have trouble undoing the adjustment screw. The base is flat so it doesn't make me tilt my foot to stabilize it, and it is very stable without my feet on the base. It came with a helpful instructional video. The design won't hurt my horse. The soft cup cradle doesn't irritate my horses coronary band, and fits both size horses, but a draft horse and mini cradle are available as is a longer post to use the stand for dental work.

Dislikes: I wish the post stored right on the unit when I was using the cradle (and vise versa). There is a style that does that from another manufacturer the "Hoof-it" hoofstand BIA99 in the "Country Supply" catalog. However that model is not recommended for draft horses and since my one horse is draft sized I didn't want to chance it.

Quality: As I said it is very sturdy. After over a year of twice daily use it shows only slight discoloration on the cradle webbing where I spilled thrush treatment.

Summary: I had previously purchased a steel tri-pod hoof stand and it tipped over, when it did my horse could get his hoof caught in between the three legs of the unit, which was very dangerous. It was unable to be stabilized. The height could not be adjusted (my horses are significantly different sizes). My senior horse had also had a bad injury, years ago, from a professional farriers stand of a different design. The post got caught between his hoof and shoe and he dragged it when he bolted, the base was an anvil heavy and he injured his stifle. I injured my back in 2003 and my elder horse broke his pelvis in a barn fire 1993; yet we are both comfortable with this stand. The flat base keeps my pelvis alignment if my toe is raised my pelvis alignment is off and I hurt. I clicker trained my horses to put their feet in the stand without my lifting them. I got this stand partly to train my young horse about stands but this stand was so comfortable for him he stopped being reactive right away. He still doesn't like my farriers stand as well.
