Purchase: I purchased my Tredsteps Half Chaps on eBay for $85.00. I found this to be a relatively good deal considering that they retail for $189.00 at my local tack shop.

Likes: These half chaps get two thumbs up in my book for appearance. Although they are not specifically made to be "field-boot look alikes", from a distance they could certainly be mistaken for field boots. The inner calf is made of a smooth leather while the outside is made of the "stretch" leather and fits very snug. I have not had any problems with the half chaps bulging or wrinkling and causing discomfort. These chaps also have the spanish topline to elongate the leg as well as a swagger tab that is firmly stictched to the leather so it doesn't flap. I was rather please to be able to choose from so many different size combinations. You are certain to find a calf and height size that accomodates your leg perfectly. Also, I have to point out that these chaps fit snug around my paddock boots with no bulge or excess that is common with a lot of the half chaps these days. They could easily be mistaken for custom quality chaps.

Dislikes: There are a few things that I do not like about these chaps. First, the zipper starts at the bottom of the chaps and zips up to behind the knee. Every pair of half chaps I have owned in the past zipped from the top down. The zipper direction doesn't ruin the quality of the chaps, it simply makes them a little more difficult to get on (but a little practice cures that problem!). Second, the sizing runs a little small. I have a 14" calf with breeches and socks so I ordered a 14/17. When I put these on for the first time I was afraid that I was never going to get them on! So for future advice, purchase at least one-half inch larger than your actual calf measurements.

Quality: I have only worn these chaps 7 or 8 times but so far that have held up really well and are comfortable while I am in the saddle.

Summary: Bottom line, I'm not sure I would pay full-price ($185.00 or so) for these half chaps but I would certainly pay $85.00 for them again. They feel great on and look beautiful on. I think the only step up from here would be custom.
