Purchase: I bought this pair of boots on a Dover sale for around $80. I was expecting my feet to grow, and my legs, so I wasn't going to buy an expensive pair of boots just yet. These boots looked okay, and most of all, they were cheap!
Likes: These boots quite literally broke in when I put them on and stood up. Absolutely no break in time required! Also, they shine up pretty well, and the back zipper goes all the way to the heel, which in Ovation's other field boot it doesn't. I can wear these boots all day long and not feel a thing! They are really comfortable. They look good too. A woman that rides with my barn, who has been riding for 40 years and showing on the A and AA Circuit for almost that many years stopped me in my tracks last year and said, "A-----, you are 11. Please tell me you aren't wearing custom Vogel's?" My mom, who was sitting nearby, and I laughed, and told her they were really some $80 Dover Special! She was very surprised.
Dislikes: The boot height is short, and the foot is big. I bought these wearing a 9.5 and hoping to squeeze into the 9 (that was as big as they got), and now I wear a 10, and the nine is roomy, still! If you are in-between sizes, order one size down. Also, they a re only partly lined, and the lining is thin, so they collapse down, making them shorter.
Quality: To be honest, the construction and quality of these boots is definitely sub-par. So far, the laces snapped about a week after I bought them (replaced w/ Ariat laces that have held up well), one zipper was replaced, on toe is coming unstitched, and the sole is peeling up by the zipper on one. Luckily, I live by a great shoe shop worker who charges little and fixes a lot, so these breakdowns haven't been a big problem.
Summary: These boots are GREAT to buy for the growing kid. They are cheap, and they're great while they fit. I use them now as schooling boots, so I can be rough on them and not worry about scuffing up my show boots. The boots look good, and feel good while you are riding, and that's what really matters.
