Purchase: I borrowed this book from my local library, though the cover price was $24.95 in hardcover. I was working with mustangs at the time and wanted some guidence, as there is hardly anything written on the subject. It was a best seller in it's day, so I bet you could buy it pretty inexpensively in used condition on Amazon.com.

Likes: This book was the cornerstone of my dealings with horses ever since I read it. It was true genius. It basically was the reason I made any kind of progress with the mustangs I worked with. Monty's system, which uses a horse's own body language and roundpenning to gently establish trust and dominance works wonders on any horse. The book is written as a biography and is fraught with Monty's feelings about the mistreatment of horses, and the misfortune and later abundance of his own life. It is easy to use his methods after reading this book because you don't only know what they should look like, you know what they should feel like too.

Dislikes: I really didn't dislike anything about this book. I guess I wish the hardcover was cheaper when it came out, because I would have liked to buy it.

Quality: The writing is solid, lyrical and personal. I feel like even someone who didn't care much for horses would be drawn in.

Summary: I would recommend this book to anyone, especially because of the way it wrangles with traditional perceptions of masculinity and not only how they relate to horses, but how they relate to society at large.
