Purchase: I bought this cavesson from Dover saddlery for around $35 plus shipping. I had to customize a bridle for a hard-to-fit mare whose head is cob sized in length but broad enough across the poll, forehead and jaw to need full size parts in those areas.
I bought this cob-sized cavesson for this purpose, along with other individual parts.
Likes: The leather seems decent enough; it's fairly supple and the noseband is nicely padded.
Dislikes: The black dye started coming off almost immediately. My husband had to re-dye in with black leather dye and even that didn't last very long. I have a sort-of-black, sort-of-dark brown noseband. Also - the nose band seems a bit short. I have to buckle it on the very first hole. That might simply be because my mare just as a broader jaw than the average cob. The headstall part fit her fine.
Quality: The construction could be better. One day while bridling my mare, she spooked, pulled away from me, and stepped on the bridle, and the cavesson headstall strap broke away from the nose band fairly easily. I had it repaired and I continue to use it. But it could be sturdier, I think.
Summary: It seems to me that if the manufacturer took the time to use decent enough leather, they could have also taken the time to dye it properly so the color would at least stay fast. I would not use this cavesson for showing because of the obvious loss of color on the noseband. But for everyday use, it's utilitarian. But I can't help but wonder if the Crown bridles have the same quality deficits. I wouldn't buy a whole bridle because I wouldn't trust it to either hold up under heavy use or to stay looking nice.
