Purchase: After trying over half a dozen different types of trail saddles on our Tennessee Walker, it became clear that we were going to need a custom saddle. We could not find a production saddle that would fit our horse AND my husband at the same time. He required an 18" seat and our TW had a short, steeply declining back from this withers.
We spoke and/or e-mailed with three different custom gaited-horse saddle makers. It was clear from the first exchange with Melissa Sipe at MontanaMountainHorse.com that we'd found someone knowledgeable and very customer-service oriented. For all the tack, saddle and pad, plus some extras, we paid right around $1500. Thanks, Melissa!!
Likes: The saddle is perfectly fitted to our VERY hard to fit Tennessee Walker. It is VERY comfortable for my husband who has a mild back problem. It is well-made and completely customized for our kind of trail riding.
Dislikes: So far we can find nothing we're not pleased with.
Quality: It is very well made -- and the tree fits our horse which was THE BIG challenge.
Summary: Melissa sent us three different trees to try and, based on photos and lengthy conversations, finally suggested we use a modified Friesian tree. The saddle is perfect -- it fits our TW completely comfortably and my husband LOVES it!! We are totally happy -- and we took Melissa's recommendations on the saddle pad and the breast collar and both are exactly suited to our horse's needs. It was a swell experience, start to finish.
