Manufacturer: Circle Y
Model: Carlsbad Flex Trail Saddle 2376
Category: Trail Saddles
Purchase: In my saddle search, I started with the most well-known brands. Circle Y Saddles piqued my interest because of their many choices of saddles, and how visually appealing they were. I knew I wanted a trail saddle that was both comfortable for me and my horse, and Circle Y offered both qualities in many varieties. I found the saddle I liked in their catalog, then had my local Circle Y dealer, Butch Colbert of Greene County Horse Supplies, in Greeneville NY, order it for me. I paid $1400 for the saddle, breast plate and bridle. Butch gives great deals.
Likes: I love this saddle. It has a deep, comfortable seat. I feel that I am part of the horse's back, not just "perched" up there. This saddle is one you can ride in all day and not feel sore at all, and from what my horse tells me, this saddle feels pretty good on his back, too. It has a high gullet so there is no pressure on the horse's withers. Even though my horse has "normal" withers, this saddle fits the high withered horse as well as a wither-less mule!
Dislikes: The only negative I can come up with for this saddle is the weight. It is under 30 pounds, which isn't bad for a Western saddle, but I would like it if it was in the 22-25 pound range.
Quality: The Carlsbad Saddle is rich with quality, and you'll know this at first touch. Circle Y didn't skimp on the materials at all. The leather is supple but durable. The tooling is detailed without being overdone. The D-rings and conchos add to the elegance of this saddle without being flashy. This saddle will last me years of use with the proper care I intend to give it.
Summary: I would recommend this saddle to anyone who is looking for a good-looking, comfortable ride. The depth of this seat isn't something I have found in too many Western saddles. My friend who rides strictly English tells me that my saddle reminds her of a close-contact Dressage saddle with my saddle seat being as deep as it is. For durability and quality, and those long trail rides you know you love, you can't beat Circle Y. Buy one--your horse will thank you and you will be so happy with your new saddle!
