Purchase: I bought these half chaps from Dover Saddlery for $99.90. I bought them to go with my Ariat Heritage II laced paddock boots. I wanted the complete system so to speak. I had the half chaps a few years ago but needed a smaller size and I wanted the chocolate color.
Likes: I loved these half chaps when they first came out and I still love them. They look really nice with the matching paddock boots. The look sharp, and professional. You don't look like you are wearing half chaps. They are padded on the inside so you don't get rubbed or pinched by your stirrup leathers. The leather is of a good quality, not too soft and not too stiff. They really didn't need breaking in. I could ride and walk in them comfortably right from the start. The chaps have a zipper and then a little velcro flap the goes down the length of the chap where it gets zipped together so you don't see a zipper and the flap stays closed. I really like that. I hate seeing zippers. I have to say these chaps take a beating, I just throw in the tack trunk when I am done and I don't clean them often, but when I do they look new again! I think they are tough and going to last. The zipper is still working perfect after 6 months and doesn't seem like it's going to fail anytime soon. I also really like the chocolate color. It's a change from the standard black that I had in the past! Oh, one more thing, they really help keep your lower leg still, they let you get a solid grip.
Dislikes: They are a tad bit hot in the summer. The padding I think causes that. But, you can take them off when you are done riding! I can't ever get quite the right size either. I should be medium short, but when I first got them they were too short. I followed Ariat's measurement chart, and that's what I really should be. I had to get the regular medium, and those are too tall. So I am not sure if my leg length is odd, or if it's Ariat's chart that's off or if there was just a problem in the half chaps that I ordered. I think it would be best to try them on in person.
Quality: The quality is really quite good. So far there isn't anything I can fault. The leather cleans up superbly. The velcro has remained strong and tight and same with the zipper. The zipper is a heavy duty Vislon zipper. Also the elastic that goes around the bottom of your boot hasn't broken down even with all the messes I walk through. There is no loose stitching or hanging threads anywhere and all the seams are sewn tightly and securely.
Summary: Ariat Classic II Half Chaps are worth the price. They are comfortable, practical and look elegant while doing their job at protecting your legs while riding. They give you the look of a tall boot with the convenience of a half chap. I would highly recommend them. Basically, they get the job done and look good doing it! I'd buy them all over again, and in fact I did!
