Purchase: I bought this blanket at Halls Saddlery in Wisconsin about 10 years ago. It was around $100 at that time. I was in need of a stable blanket, and one that I could use as a layering piece, as winters here can be long and cold!
Likes: I love the traditional look. There is something timeless about Baker blankets. The triple woven fabric breathes so your horse doesn't sweat, but it keeps them so toasty warm. I love to use it in winter after riding. It's not always possible to get my horses completely dry in winter. I get them as dry as I can and then put this blanket on and they dry but don't shiver. I know that these aren't marketed as a cooler/wicking piece of horse clothing, but they do work that way! I've had my original Baker 10 years and 6 horses later and it still looks as good as the day I bought it.
Dislikes: I really wish they would add detachable elastic leg straps. The blanket does have some hip darts and contouring but it does slip off to the side, strangely only on the hindquarters. I had D rings added and bought replacement leg straps and it's stays even now. Also, if you use the blanket a lot it does rub the fur off your horses shoulders. I only use it as a layering piece when needed or as a trailering blanket. Oh, yes, it will collect shavings like you wouldn't believe! The do brush off, and I found if I spray show sheen on it they don't stick so much!
Quality: After 10 years of hard use, this blanket is still going strong. It's never needed a repair! I can't say that for any of my other blankets, many which cost several hundred dollars. Nothing has broken, the hardware is still strong, not even a bend in any of the buckles. There is nylon binding all the edges and thick nylon cross surcingles. The two buckle front closure is still perfect, even the grommets. It's a tough as nails stable blanket.
Summary: I bought this blanket because I had many fond memories of them growing up and all the lesson horses wearing them. My teacher at that time must've known they were great. I have followed in her footsteps and have one of my own. I only needed one and as much as I'd love to buy another I can't because this one won't fall apart! It's a great stable blanket, it has a classic look and is a true piece of horse wear history. Baker has been going strong for over 100 years....I bet my blanket will be around that long!
