Purchase: I purchased the Marciante trail saddle about four years ago directly from the manufacturer, the Marciante Saddle Company, for about $800. Their website, trailsaddles.net, presented a high quality custom made product for what seemed to be a fair price.
Likes: Marciante makes a saddle that will custom fit your horse, and one that can be readapted to any future horse. The saddle maker works from photos of your horses back. It was an excellent fit for my horse, and indeed very comfortable to ride. The stirups swing free eliminating any knee tension, and the leather was pliable. It was a comfortable saddle for both me and my horse.
Dislikes: This saddle has a pommel that slopes away from the horn. My pommel bags would not stay put. Perhaps more importantly, some of the stitching started to separate after a few rides. When I decided to sell the saddle my local saddle shop wouldn't take it on consignment as they felt the quality was too low.

Summary: Sometimes "You get what you pay for." and sometimes you pay too much. I paid too much. $800. may seem like a bargain for a custom made saddle, but not in this case. If you consider one of these saddles, ask the manufacturer for close up photos of the stitching (of current saddles). In terms of comfort it' first rate, but Maricante needs to work harder on quality control.
