Purchase: My parents bought this saddle new at the local tack shop in Connecticut when I was a child in the mid 1960s. I don't remember what they paid for it; my guess is about $250. I still remember how beautiful it was--a beautiful havana color with the light brown suede knee flaps. Mine is a 15-inch model made in the original Stubben factory in Germany.
Likes: The saddle served me well during my childhood. I always found it very comfortable and felt very secure when jumping. I used it constantly from age 8 until I was about 14. (I am very petite.) I used it on several mounts, and it fit every one. After I outgrew it, I loaned it to a friend to use, and then my sister used it. After that, it went into storage for about 25 years, when I dragged it out for my daughter. She loved it as much as I did. She has since outgrown it, and it is presently still in use at the barn where we both ride.
Dislikes: Nothing. I love my little Stubben Rex.
Quality: My dog chewed on the suede knee flaps, and I had to have them replaced. Other than that, the only repair has been new billets about 4 years ago. It is still is good shape, a very dark brown now with a slight rip on the cantle from having been dropped on concrete. :( The Stubben is one of the best built, most solidly constructed saddles ever.
Summary: My Stubben Rex was a terrific investment. I will NEVER sell this saddle. This is an excellent child's saddle; if your kid rides, buy one!
