Purchase: My Thoroughbred gelding was having saddle fitting problems from the pad I recently used on him because it was too thick, so I thought I would try the Mattes half pad with the front and rear trim. It was $120 on sale at my local tack shop, so I bought it. I think these pads usually go for about $160-200, so I thought it was a good deal.
Likes: I LOVE the open spine, and how it pulls itself up into the gullet of my saddle. The rolled sheepskin on the top of the pad is very stylish, and I love the look of how plush it looks when I'm riding. I can feel my horse a lot better with the Mattes, also, and he has not had any back problems since I used the new half pad, which I bought a couple months ago. The sheepskin is not too thick, perfect width, and the pad does not slip. Some people said it slips under their saddle, but mine never has.. as long as the billet straps are on my saddle. Also, I use it over a gel pad and baby pad..some use it directly on their horses' back, but I think it works fine on top of everything.
Dislikes: The billet straps are a little cheap, but hey, they work.
Quality: Good construction, I don't think it will tear easily in all the time I will continue to use it.
Summary: Overall, if I ever got another horse I would buy it another Mattes pad to fit the saddle better. Great product!
