IRH
International ATH - black/clear
English Chaps/Boots/Helmets
Manufacturer: IRH
Model: International ATH - black/clear
Category: English Chaps/Boots/Helmets
Purchase: I wanted a new helmet because I was going to start showing and my Troxel velvet one didn't really fit me anymore. I bought the ATH on Dover Saddlery's website for about $130, and I got the black with clear strip one.
Likes: I like how the strap molds around your ears and neck. Also, the helmet covering was nice because it didn't get very dusty or dirty. That's about it.
Dislikes: Ok, so I got this helmet because I thought it looked nice and like a cheaper version of the ever-popular GPA helmets. I was so wrong. I really dislike this helmet. It makes my head look HUGE, and it is not very comfortable. I don't think it fits very well because it feels like it just sits on top of my head, and I KNOW that I have the right size, a medium. It is also HEAVY. I tried on my friend's GPA and I thought I had nothing on my head, whereas the IRH felt like it was squishing my head because it was so heavy when on. This is definitely a CHEAP version of the GPA, meaning in that it is not worth your money at all, and that I think they just tried to copy the GPA's but totally failed. Also, they are NOT safe! I was riding once and my horse took off, leaving me to fall off. I fell off and the helmet simply rolled right off my head when I hit the ground! I always have the chin strap secured, and the helmet IS my size, but it just came off! I received a concussion because of it, and I am always afraid when I ride with it on now...shouldn't you feel safe with a helmet on?
Quality: Seems like good construction, but I wouldn't trust my head safety with it.
Summary: The bottom line is that I am getting rid of this helmet. I am buying a GPA, because frankly, I'm going to spend as much money on my head as I can to keep it safe. Just because you want a cheaper version of a better helmet does not mean you should do ahead and gamble with your safety. I think the IRH company needs to go back and look at their design. Also, GPA has way more sizes that should fit my head super correctly, whereas the IRH only has small, medium, and large.
