Purchase: Trialed this saddle only- they were asking $900 for it used. Think they are around $2,500 new. Wanted a comfortable saddle- this one had the excellent tree which incorporates a flexible membrane in the seat for concussion absorption-good for back/tailbone issues. The saddle is also adjustable by qualified saddler.
Likes: The seat! Wow, no back pain. It 'flexes' with you but not in a manner that impairs riding- not bouncy- just takes the sharp edges off. Very, very comfortable seat. I've found most Kieffers are comfortable- they have a rep. for being 'crotchbusters' but I think if you get the right size, you are ok. The knee blocks and very deep seat in this model were awesome as far as security on trail. Posting was a joy.
Dislikes: This particular saddle had a lot of damage under the gullet- deep gouges. Most likely from a saddle tree where the saddle rests on the gullet v. the panels. The seat itself, if you felt from the pommel towards the center of the seat, had a big 'lump' of material (softer). This 'lump' did cause discomfort at the canter in sensitive areas. Suspect the gullet damage may have compromised the padding membrane on the seat. I did not purchase this saddle but would consider another with that system.
Quality: Quality is awesome, honestly for the money these saddles are really put together well. The leather is supple, not slippery. The billets are strong- has the v-system which I prefer to the point billet. Whoever had this saddle was clearly abusive and would slam, drag it on/off a poorly designed saddle rack- the gullet should not be where the saddle rests- anyway- I liked the quality so much I didn't hesitate to buy my daughter the synthetic saddle online-sight unseen.
Summary: The position this saddle for dressage is perfect and effortless. The comfort (aside from the lump) was awesome. I am not used to super deep seats and what I considered large knee blocks but really liked them in this saddle. The quality is durable yet user friendly, not cheap feeling. The flocking was soft, panels broad enough for wide backs, wither clearance excellent as it had a cut back head. The fact that Kieffers are adjustable for around $100 is a huge plus. Highly recommend a non-abused model!
