Padded Stable Halter
Halters/Ropes/Leads
Manufacturer: Raleigh
Model: Padded Stable Halter
Category: Halters/Ropes/Leads
Purchase: Bought this a year ago from Schneiders, via catalog. The easy answer - I wanted a leather every day stall and turn out halter that was padded, without having to pay $$$$$ and risk it's loss or breakage. This junker cost about $29.00 now, I forget what it was when purchased.
Likes: Huh, well, it fits my big Arab perfectly, even better than most high end halters; forget Arab halters for him - too small, and Q-horse or full size are often too big.
Has nice brass hardware.
Is 3/4 width, so it doesn't overwhelm.
That's about all I like.
Dislikes: THE LEATHER!!!!!!!!! UGH!!!!!! Puts new meaning into HARD, STIFF, UNYIELDING. This thing comes with double adjustable crown buckles, (Yay, right?) But I actually had to use PLIERS to squeeze and bend the ends to position the crown into the buckle, and THEN HAMMER it flush!!! This is AFTER I oiled and conditioned the ....leather? It would not take oil at all. The padding - what a JOKE! The so-called padding is as hard and stiff as the rest of it - it won't take oil either. Here it is, a year later, and the only time it softens up is when I soap it in HOT water. As soon as the thing dries, it's back to petrified stone status.
Quality: I will give it this - I do use it as a turn out halter, because if Arabby loses or breaks it, I won't freak. I WILL try to find it if lost though, if only to scavenge the hardware !!
It's still in perfect shape - HA! I guess so! Anything THAT rock hard solid in materials should keep it's shape! My horses don't tie-pull, so I don't know how strong it'd be if yanked hard. I don't use it to tie at the trailer, both because I don't trust it, (won't risk having a loose horse), and also I'd be ashamed to be seen with it as a "public" halter!
Summary: All Raleigh leather products are like this - cheap, hard, inflexible, just horrible. Explains the reason they are so inexpensive. As a turn out halter, it's fine. It's never rubbed my guy, fits very well, and if it does get caught on something it'll probably break instantly, causing the horse no harm. Seems to be indestructible - cleaned up it looks the same as day one new, even after all the mud ground in, and you'll always have that great solid brass hardware to use if you do bust it up. Not worth 30 bucks though.
