Purchase: I always pull my horses' shoes for the winter, which then limits how much I can ride them; we have really hard, rocky gravel roads here in Iowa, which are very hard on hoofs. I do try to ride through the winter as much as possible however and wanted to protect my horses while we are hacking out down the road. I thought these boots would allow me to ride through the winter and also work as a replacement should my horses lose a shoe. I bought them from Valley Vet Supply and paid about %64 apiece for them.
Likes: They are tough, durable, and they really do stay on. We walked, trotted, cantered and spooked in them - they stayed put. They did not rub and both my horses moved out naturally in them.
I love the way the gaiters are made: very soft, pliable, don't rub and are easy to fasten and unfasten.
Dislikes: They are a struggle to get on! I noticed another individual reported this, and it's true. You have to do quite a bit of tugging and pulling. They aren't that easy to remove either. I found that tugging on the gaiter works better than the "pull strap" provided. Once the slip on, the rest is easy. You do need a hoof pick or screwdriver to open the metal latches on the fronts of the boots in order to remove them.
They are slick on grass however. I wouldn't recommend riding much over say a closely cropped lawn in them unless the terrain is quite flat.
Quality: They are sturdy, fairly light weight, with good quality nylon and velcro on the gaiter straps. The gaiters are well-padded, soft and flexible where they fit over the horses heels and back of their pasterns.
Summary: I think they're going to solve my problem just fine for the occasional ride on gravel roads through the winter. I also think they will "break in" a bit and become a bit easier to apply and remove. Until then though, I'll have to resign myself to using a little muscle. I'm giving this product a "4" only because they are a bit hard to get on and off.
