Purchase: I needed a saddle for our paint horse as he's much wider with a "dippier" back than my Rocky Mountain horses. I bought this saddle brand new from a private owner who had never even taken it out of the tack store. I got it for $900 though they normally sell for anywhere from $1250 to $1400 from the retailer.
Likes: This is a beautifully built saddle with leather and synthetic wool underneath. It has a very nice flare to the tree in the front so that it stays out of the shoulders with no gouging. This is because the tree is an AXIS tree which is made by Martin. In fact, this saddle is made by Martin for Cashel, so you're getting a high quality saddle for a very reasonable price. The leather is high quality all over. The polished stirrups and conchos add a very sharp touch to the whole picture. The seat is super comfy on long rides and the flared tree gives my paint all the shoulder room he needs.
Dislikes: Only that it doesn't fit my gaited Rocky Mountain horses! Sure I could pad it up, but it's just really not made for their less bulky shoulder and back.
Quality: The construction seems to be very nice. The leather is thick yet pliable. No sore knees from unturned fenders as the fenders are quite pliable. I really can't think of a thing that's bad about this saddle. It's been thoughtfully put together, and at only 15 lbs, it's a VERY nice lightweight, yet full leather trail saddle.
Summary: The bottom line is that this saddle is built by some of the best in the Western saddle industry (Martin) and on their AXIS tree, which is really amazing. The price, the weight, and the quality are very reasonable for what you are getting - this saddle looks like it will easily last a lifetime. This tree was designed specifically with stock type horses, such as QH and Paints, in mind and, as such, fits my Paint perfectly. Just wish it fit my gaited horses as well!
