Model: Biotin 800 with Yucca
Category: Horse Health and Well Being
Purchase: This is available through horse.com/Country Supply for $20 for a 30-day supply. I usually buy larger quantities because I have several horses and use a lot of it. I bought it because I have used biotin in the past with excellent results. Last winter, which was my first winter in a state where it rains all winter rather than snows, 4 of my horses got hoof abscesses from cracked hooves from standing in mud then standing in shavings. I needed to do something about that this year, so I started early for winter. They've been on it for about 4-5 months.
Likes: I put three horses on this product: a 10 year old OTT TB who is reschooling; a 12 year old paint pleasure trail horse, and a 20 year old TB broodmare. Here's what I like: This is an inexpensive and highly concentrated product. $20 gets you a 30-day supply, except that the concentration is so high that you can half the dose, as I do, every day (1/2 scoop), and still see results. I have three horses on this supplement and all of them have hard, solid hooves. No splits or cracks this year! And halving the dose halves the price---for me, a 60 day supply is only $20 for one horse. There is also yeast to help with digestion. I don't know that the yeast does anything, really, but the biotin works great for the hooves, and it shows.
Dislikes: Horse.com seems to constantly have it on back order, so I have to plan accordingly and order early, since B vitamins are water soluble.
Quality: Highly concentrated, double-dose formula that is palatable to even the pickiest horses and blends well with feed. You can half the dose and still see results, because horses only need 400 mg/day for strong hooves.
Summary: It takes about 6 months for a new hoof to grow in, so don't expect to see results after 30 days. That said, if you're willing to invest long-term (which I know can be a bit scary---am I just throwing my money away?), this is a great product that works well and is very inexpensive. I keep buying it. It works as well as any biotin product I've tried, and is very inexpensive, too.
