Devon Aire
Freedom USPC Zip-Back Field Boot
English Chaps/Boots/Helmets

Manufacturer: Devon Aire
Model: Freedom USPC Zip-Back Field Boot
Category: English Chaps/Boots/Helmets

Purchase: I ordered my Devon Aire Freedom Zip Back Field Boots from Dover Saddlery for $89.00, a bargain compared to our local tack store which was selling less attractive Devon Aire boots for $250. I purchased these because I wanted a cheap pair of field boots that I could wear all day schooling horses, cleaning stalls and giving lessons to avoid destroying the show boots I got from Santa!

Likes: I love these boots for two reasons, ok.. maybe three; at first glance I can hardly tell the difference between these and my $600 pair! The elongated spanish top line and toe punch detail lend them to looking great in the show ring. They only come in one height but it is ample enough to fit the average riders leg properly. The only noticeable difference in appearance is that the ankles are not as tapered as my Ariat boots, but I believe this is why they were so comfortable the first day I wore them. I could easily stretch my heels down in a brand new pair of boots, and that is something I have never come across! Truly a painless break in process, which a lot of companies claim - but is usually false. Incidentally, this claim is nowhere in their description and I think it should be! I can also clean stalls in these boots without feeling guilty because they can be hosed off just like rubber boots. This also keeps them from smelling as bad so I don't get (as many) odd looks in the grocery line or yelled at for wearing them in the house.

Dislikes: My only complaint about my new favorite boots is that the size chart in the Dover catalogue for Devon Aire boots is not accurate. I carefully measured (several times) and the chart told me I would fall into the wide calf category. My other boots are a full calf so this seemed normal. When they arrived they were huge and looked like clown shoes. Field boots are supposed to fit very tight because they stretch out with wear and get shorter as they break down. These were gaping at the top and made my calf look anything but flattered. I returned them for the regular calf and those fit perfect! I would advise you order them a size smaller because they run big in size and width.

Quality: For a synthetic field boot these look very leather like. I have seen some that look a little to shiny and plastic like but these have a detailed leather like grain and could fool anybody who doesn't smell them. To me, the eyelets for lacing seem a little far apart but if you tighten the laces you really cant tell, and it will give you more ankle support.

Summary: I have recommended these boots to every horse lover I know. I used to live in paddock boots and half chaps but I am so hard on my boots I have to buy a new pair every year. These are actually more affordable than buying a set of boots and half chaps and offer more leg security. Also, I wouldn't recommend hosing off your half chaps but these field boots take it pretty well. I think its safe to say I'm in love with these. I hope they are still available for many years to come or I may have to stock up.
