Custom Hat Shaper
Western Miscellaneous
Manufacturer: Griffith
Model: Custom Hat Shaper
Category: Western Miscellaneous
Purchase: I bought a western hat at a local tack store but nobody shapes them in our area. Instead of trying to find someone and traveling, I ordered this Griffith Custom Hat Shaper from Pleasant Ridge Saddlery in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. It is normally $39.95 Cdn but came on sale for $26.95 without taxes and shipping.
Likes: An excellent idea! I had never used this product before, or knew anyone that did, so bought it on a chance. Instructions are inside the hat shaper (and do not touch where the hat rests), but are clear and easy enough for anyone to follow!
The hook and loop closures that secure the two pieces together are replaceable! When they wear out, you just buy some new velcro and stick it on there - it really is that easy.
Dislikes: It doesn't happen often, but I can't think of anything I dislike - or would change - about this product!
Quality: A two piece heavy-duty plastic hat shaper. There are four different styles of brim shape to choose from so you get a custom look: Rancher, Vaquero, Trail Boss or Showman.
Several hook and loop closures keep the shaper pieces together - and secure - while the hat is inside. There's also a small tab at the back of the shaper with a hole in it - so you can hang it on a hook when you're storing the hat.
Summary: The instructions recommend that you steam your hat before shaping it. The easiest way I found was to hold my hat over a boiling pot of water (I recommend an adult do this only!). In a few minutes it was pliable enough to stick in the shaper.
I left it for a few hours and undid the shaper to see how well it was working - the hat had already picked up the shape and it looked really nice!
Having reviewed lots of different tack and apparel items over the years, I give top marks to products that do what they are intended to do - easily. Products that stand the test of time and are affordable to the average consumer is also nice. This is definitely one of them.
