Christ
Bareback Pad - Premium
English Saddle Fittings/Pads

Manufacturer: Christ
Model: Bareback Pad - Premium
Category: English Saddle Fittings/Pads

Purchase: I purchased this pad through ebay for $325.00 including shipping. It did not come with the girth. I decided to buy it after researching the L'apogee bareback saddle/pad which is much more expensive. The Christ appears to be made the same with the exception of there being no sheepskin on the underside of the flaps on the Christ, only on the area that covers the back of the horse.

Likes: I like the construction which appears to be very good quality. The sheepskin is very smooth, soft and comfortable to sit on. There is a foam insert in the "cantle" for support. I got the "premium" pad which has 2 thigh blocks in front. They make great wrist rests. The Sheepskin in the seat area unzips and is removable. You can also replace the foam cantle or insert your own pad in there for extra padding, if you want. I placed a sheet of memory foam under the seat area (my horse has prominent withers and spine) although I doubt it needed it. This pad is very fluffy and pillowy on it's own! There are D-rings everywhere and you can even attach stirrups, although I wouldn't recommend doing that without a really good treeless saddle type pad underneath. There are D-rings for a "Y" breast collar, a polo-type breast collar and a crupper. The hand grab in front is useful for carrying the pad. The girth straps are made of a synthetic beta-type material that is strong and supple making it easy to tighten the girth. I use a wintec elastic girth. I've only had this pad about a month, but it seems to repel dirt rather than absorb it, which I like. I also like the fact that the entire pad is washable.

Dislikes: This pad is large and I would like it if they offered a smaller size (seat length). My thighs do not reach the thigh blocks, but they make comfortable wrist rests for holding the reins. The cantle pad is a little too giving to be supportive, it would be nice if it were more stiff. I'm currently looking for a suitable replacement. Although this pad is very comfortable it does not provide a lot of grip so it's not really good for hard fast riding, which is what I like to do. It's great for a leisurely stroll or trail ride, though.

Quality: The construction quality appears to be very good. I have unzipped the seat and looked at the stitching, which appears well-done. The zipper is strong and easy to manipulate. I can find nothing wrong with it's construction. Everything is secure.

Summary: This is an excellent quality and comfortable pad, great for a leisurely ride. The price is better than the L'appogee. It's not the most secure-feeling pad for hard riding, though.
