Purchase: This saddle was purchased slightly used for 1000.00 from a tack store in Lennon Michigan called The Wire Horse. I was looking to replace my Stubben Scandica which no longer fit my TB. I was not all that impressed with the leather on the Bates after being spoiled with buffalo leather from the Stubben.
Likes: The first time that I sat in the saddle was in the store on the horse. I really did not expect to take the saddle home to try out since it had the seemingly odd air filled bladders as opposed to wool flocking. However, once I sat in it I was amazed at how it just seemed to cradle my body in such a comforting way. It was almost as soothing as mom's Sunday dinner. The deeper seat was the first thing that I noticed. Once I got it on my horse I was hooked. He moved freely in the shoulder in it and just felt light and airy. Java has always been the more difficult one to fit. I rode in it for a week and had my trainer evaluate it for proper fit. I checked him for tenderness after every ride and yee- haw...a wonderful match.
Dislikes: Although the leather is of respectable quality, it just does not have that buttery feel of old english leather (or buffalo/elk hide). I have come to realize that it is quite durable and easy to clean.
Quality: I was very skeptical of the cair panels at first. My horse was not. It seems to be well made. I was glad to read that reflocking with wool is a viable option.
Summary: My friends' 9 year old granddaughter rides my horse on the lunge line and always requests to use "the saddle that feels like a chair".
