Purchase: I purchased this breast collar from the online website crestridgesaddlery.com. I was searching for a breast collar to fit my Clydesdale. Everything I found, was just a regular sized breast collar with longer straps to attach it to the saddle. As I quickly found out, this does not work. The conformation of a draft horse is a little different, and the breast collar needs to fall lower on the chest than it would on a light horse. This one piece of tack has been a Godsend in fitting my hard to fit horse. I paid approximately $4o.oo for this breast collar.
Likes: This is the only breast collar that I have ever seen that attaches not only to the saddle, but the girth as well. This helps stabilize the saddle by keeping the girth where it needs to be, and keeps the saddle exactly where you put it. All this is accomplished without interfering with my horses neck/throat and does not interfere with movement in his shoulders. The breast collar is easily adjusted to sit exactly where I want it on his chest and any pressure from the saddle moving is distributed across his chest and never pulls up on his throat, like every other breast collar had done.
Dislikes: I have not found anything I don't like about this breast collar.
Quality: The construction of this piece is superb. The leather is supple, strong, and drum dyed, so it never fades or even shows scratches. This breast collar has held up to regular use on a very sweaty Clydesdale. It is easy to take apart and clean. My current breast collar is over 4 years old and shows almost no wear. The leather, stitching and even the hardware has held up beyond my expectations.
Summary: This piece of tack has saved me of having to change saddle's, again. I have had my saddle fit checked and have always been told it fit fine, yet my saddle slid back. It is just plain hard to keep a saddle in place on a roundy-backed triple X sized horse. This collar has worked wonders. The way it is designed is so simple, yet I have never seen this method used anywhere else. I would never ride my horse without my collar firmly in place. I just received my new 4 point all terrain gaited horse breast collar for my new horse, another Clyde. Don't let the name fool you, you can use these breast collars on any breed of horse. This piece is well worth the money, if fact it is a bargain, and will save you considerable time and frustration in adjusting your saddle. Believe me, once I get up on that 18 hand boy, I don't want to have to get off to re-saddle!
