Purchase: After my regular vet diagnosed bone chips in my OTTB, she recommended that removal would be the best treatment to help keep him sound and that leaving them in could actually shorten the length of time that he would stay sound. She recommended the Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine and Dr. Alicia Bertone for the removal. The surgery was a lot more affordable than I would have imagined!
Likes: From my initial call to speak to Dr. Bertone about my concerns regarding the procedure all the way to the stable hand that came out to ensure that we had no problems loading my horse, everyone that I came in contact there was knowledgeable, helpful, professional and kind. I truly can not say enough about the team working there to help animals feel better. Even after I brought him home the staff was very receptive to my calls regarding any concerns that I had.
Dislikes: I wish OSU was closer to me! I hate the 3 hour drive to Columbus under the best of circumstances, like going to the Equine Affaire and the QH Congress!!!!
Quality: Dr. Bertone explained everything in a way that I could understand. She called me before the surgery to explain what was found in his pre-surgical exam and the plan for the surgery. I was called right after my horse woke up and briefed on what was found and his prognosis. Now at the end of his second month of recovery, he is doing very well and I am hopeful that my plan to show him in May at his first dressage show will come to happen.
Summary: My greatest wish is that no horse should ever require surgery, but we all know that accidents, colics, and general horseplay sometimes makes it a necessity. If you are in the area of it, I highly recommend the staff at OSU. Not only did he receive excellent medical care, but I also found out the staff really try to make the horses comfortable and happy while there. At least one kind medical student found the time to groom and spend time with my horse during his stay, as I couldn't stay there the 4 days he was there.
