Purchase: Used on eBay for $750 inc. shipping and matching (used) Bates leathers.
Likes: Although this saddle was a few years old and had obviously been well used, it has held up extremely well. The leather is soft but not slippery. The design fits my long thighs well, perhaps because this version has both adjustable knee and thigh blocks, and puts me in an ideal position for jumping and cross-country. Equally important is that is fits both my 14.2 h. Anglo-Arab (wide gullet) and my 16.2 h. TBxWB (medium-wide gullet) very well. It's also super comfortable on long trail rides! I no longer need to worry about losing circulation in my lower legs!
Dislikes: Not much to complain about. It's not as forward cut as some other saddles nor even as some of the other Bates CC models, but its ideal for lower levels of eventing through at least Training.
Quality: Very nice for the typical price of these saddles when new; excellent for what I paid for it.
Summary: While even a saddle w/ a changeable gullet system is not going to fit every horse, the Bates CC provides a solid fit w/o need for special padding for the majority of "normal backed" horses (I use only a thin quilted pad). It has also proven to be extremely convenient to be able to adjust the widge as my younger horse's back has changed w/ training and age. Overall, I've found this to be a surprising nice saddle for training or competition.
