Dressage Saddles
Manufacturer: Jorge Canaves/ Thornhill
Model: Vienna II
Category: Dressage Saddles
Purchase: I purchased my saddle on ebay for a very low $200 plus shipping. I believe that the saddle had no other bids because the seller had poor pictures and not much information posted, I had to contact her for more information to find out model and condition etc. Also the saddle is brown which is not as popular as black currently. This saddle is a narrow tree with a 17" seat.
Likes: This saddle is wool flocked and therefore it can be somewhat customized for a particular horse and it is well made with a wide seat and narrow twist which suits my build. Good placement of panels and stirrup bars, the flap is a nice length. Jorge Canaves has been copying the best saddle designs for years and making them in Argentina for a lot less than their counterparts. The leather is lovely and supple, it accepts oil and the saddle is very balanced. This saddle is modeled after one of the most popular Passier models, if you like the classic Passier ride you will like this saddle.
Dislikes: Although the saddle has a narrow tree, it should have a slightly more generous space between the panels to accommodate the horses spine during exercise, I am having the saddle customized by a saddler to help with this but is is rideable as it is. Again, is is great to have wool flocking, at least there is an option! In all fairness, I believe the more recent models of this saddle are wider here. Also, as the saddle is brown, which I think looks fabulous on my horse (so do the judges), it is nearly impossible to find a girth that matches that I want to afford; the two I found that match my ideal design requirements as well as color are both over $200 so I ride in a black one with a fleece cover.
Quality: This saddle was used when I purchased it and it had not been ridden in much, not regularly cleaned/oiled etc., just hanging out on a rack getting dusty. The previous owner (a quarter horse rider) said she had no use for the saddle as it never fit any of her horses(NARROW tree!). Even though the saddle was not new and had never been properly broken in, I found it very easy to condition and get going in- it fits my obscenely high-withered TB gelding very well and I was thankful to not have to buy an expensive saddle just for him as I have several other horses and two very expensive saddles already. My husband would have a fit if I came home with another Schleese... and the credit card bill!
Summary: I really lucked out by coming across this saddle for this price: it is well made, attractive, comfortable, and it fits a difficult fitting horse while keeping the rider in good position. Well worth a test ride for anyone trying out saddles.
