Purchase: I paid about $45 for some very nice, double ply, heavy, quality leather, sewn split reins. Also bought other various horse tack items such as harness leather split reins, headstalls, saddle pads, etc. All items were of excellent quality.
Likes: The reins are even in length. The leather looks like it is tip-top quality, not cheap and brittle, like much of the foreign-made tack you see these days. Though not fancy they will make nice reins for showing.
Dislikes: There is nothing not to like about these reins. The stitching and medium oil finish makes them very pretty. (Some reins do not cost much, but they are very light and rather short and do not convey much signal to the horse, making them little more than something to hold on to.) But these are certainly not in that category. My horse's trainer liked these and if he likes them, you can take it to the bank they are good!
Quality: There is an obvious look of quality of the reins. They have weight and the sewing is straight and even. My horse should be able to feel me pick up on the reins very easily.
Summary: Sulphur River Saddlery in Talco/Hagansport TX has quality tack and very well-made saddles for reasonable prices. Though I only bought reins and not a saddle, I will only give a review on the reins and the customer service I got the days I went to buy tack. The people who work there are very nice and will take their time with you and show you all the saddles and tack. I hope to be able to continue buying good well-made horse tack, and someday, perhaps, a show saddle from them.
