Purchase: Purchased from a local tack shop where we took our horses to get an accurate fit. Bought 3 of these pads all contoured 2 at 7/8" thick (~ $160 ea.)and 1 at 1" thick ($170). All had square skirts.
Likes: Great quality, beautiful wool and wonderful colors. Fit great when the horse isn't moving. Waited a long time to get such nice pads since as we spend a lot of time in the saddle and the wool keeps their back naturally cool and the moisture wicked away well. Thought we had it made!
Dislikes: Whether these pads were used on our horses with nicely muscled rounded backs or our horses with more prominent spines, they all had back sores over the loin area caused by the two sides of the felt pad under the center seam opening/closing repeatedly while the horse were moving causing the skin to be pinched underneath. Had to sell them all. Sure didn't work for us.
Quality: Great quality, well constructed and a nice 'hard' finish to the wool felt that prevented 'pilling' seen on so many other pads.
Summary: Our lesson here was not to buy saddle pads the have a seam over the spine - regardless of the horse's back type. Our replacement pads are also wool felt - only without the contoured center seam and are working just great! Hard and expensive lesson but learned nonetheless. Thank you.
