Purchase: I seriously needed new riding boots (both English and western) last fall and really wanted a pair of pull-on ropers (I was sick of my lace-up paddock boots). The major obstacle: my wide feet. Many people suggested looking for men's boots at all the local farm supply stores (the local tack shop caters mostly to women), but I never found anything quite small enough (I usually wear women's 7.5, men's 6). Out of desperation, I decided to try the tack shop, and voila! They just happened to be carrying these boots and they fit so perfectly (w/my Superfeet insoles, that is--the ones they come with are better than average quality, but too thick for me to use except w/thin socks), I didn't even have to go up in size! Unfortunately, they were only stocking this one model from Twisted X and only in one color (pink and tan with sky blue accents--not my favorite), but I was quite lucky to have discovered them when I did since they no longer carry ANY Twisted X products!
I paid $99, which I believe is the suggested price (seems pretty comparable to other brands).
Likes: Aside from a pair of Kestar Dakotas I got recently, these are the only riding boots (currently produced, that is--Dansko just HAD to drop their paddock boot line the year before my ill-fitting Ariats started giving out!) I've been able to find that fit my extremely wide feet (D or E maybe? They're ~4" across the ball--not even the Ariat Fat/Probabys or Hanovers fit, unless I go up 1.5 sizes).
The break-in time was minimal: I rode in a four-day clinic just a couple days after I purchased them and had no hot-spots/blisters/pain-of-any-sort the entire time! They are so comfortable, I wear them everywhere!
Dislikes: Really only one major pet peeve: I really wish they were taller. If my pant cuffs ride up at all, they get caught inside the tops of the boots, which also sometimes catch on my fenders--not to mention that I look like I have a second set of heels whenever I bend my ankles. Also, since the boots are the same height (9") in every size, any size larger than about a 7 or 7 1/2 starts looking ridiculously short, to my eye (I prefer ropers to be at least as tall as they are long--even if they are covered up by jeans/chaps).
I guess another (somewhat minor) one might be that, unlike most of Twisted X's boots, they only come in one width (vaguely named "M")--which happens to be perfect for me, but anyone narrower or wider might be stuck...
Oh, and they're made in China (I usually try to buy American or from any other country with good worker/environmental protection laws, but I know I can't be so picky with my feet...gotta take what fits and is somewhat affordable)
Quality: I've only had them six months, but I wore them everywhere this winter and they seem to be holding up very well.
Summary: I LOVE these boots and would buy them again, even though they aren't 100% what I like (as I mentioned, I know I can't be picky)!
If I'd known Twisted X made more wide-width boots than other brands (they actually offer A, B, and C widths on many of their women's models--way more accommodating for less-common foot sizes than most brands!), I'd have tried to buy a pair sooner--and I'll probably be sticking with them for any future western boot needs!
