Purchase: I purchased the Imus Comfort Bit at the Equine Affaire in Columbus, OH in 2007. Brenda Imus/Gaits of Gold had a booth at the event. I spent approximately $70 for the bit.
Likes: The overall concept and design of the bit is good, and I like the fact that the mouthpiece is split in the middle and each side is able to rotate independently. There is also the option of using a single rein or double reins. My horse responded well to the bit and seems very relaxed and responsive with it.
Dislikes: A few months ago I noticed that one side of the mouthpiece was beginning to separate from the copper roller in the center. The gap has continued to increase, but because it is more than two years since the purchase, it is out of warranty. I am concerned that it will either cause pinching in my horse's mouth, or the entire bit will break while I am riding. I read comments from other users on Brenda Imus' own message board, and the response was that this was prone to "wear and tear" and that horses are notoriously hard on tack, so a couple of years of good use = getting your money's worth. Not particularly impressive.
Quality: As noted, the concept of the bit is good. I am not pleased with the noticeable separation in the center of the bit.
Summary: I have owned and used other bits, purchased at roughly the same cost as the Imus Comfort Bit, that have held up for much more than two years and are still in excellent shape. The Imus bit seems to have been developed for weekend or infrequent riders. I will not spend another seventy dollars to replace the Imus bit - there are other, better bits available.
