Category: Fly Control
Purchase: I bought this flysheet customized, directly from Saratoga Horseworks' website at horseworks.com because my older gelding has a big barrel and needs an extra 3 inches drop on each side from the standard model. I also had them make a tail flap later which I sewed on to keep the gnats away from his tail area. I bought it on sale for $49 but the custom drop length added $15 so it was about $60 which was the regular price at the time. The additional tail flap they made for $10 plus shipping. So the whole custom sheet cost about $70 plus shipping but it is so worth it.
Likes: This fly sheet is the coolest flysheet out there. My horse sweats easily and Virginia gets pretty muggy in summer. When it reaches 80 degrees he sweats in any other fly sheet but this one. I also like the shoulder pleat. He never gets rubs with this sheet and he has huge shoulders. I also like the way the clips are easy and quick to attach and release.
Dislikes: The regular off-the-shelf flysheet is too short on the sides for my older gelding. He has a broad build. It's good for narrower horses like TBs or modern type warmbloods. That's why I customized it. Nice that you can do that (up to a certain length before it gets too expensive). It also gets snags in the fabric, but they don't affect the functionality. If you have a youngster wearing it, buy some extra fabric from Saratoga like I did for my 3 year old, and do your own repairs or give it to a horsewear repair person.
Quality: Love it. Never had a problem with the quality. I have bought 5 of these over the years. One thing to remember is that you have to loop one leg strap through the other when you attach them as Saratoga recommends, otherwise the sheet can shift when they roll and your horse can put a foot through the fabric.
Summary: This is a great flysheet. It's not made for a lot of playful biting activity unless you are prepared to repair it (which I do). If you have a normal fairly quiet horse it holds up great. My 17 year old gelding has had both of his for about 3-4 summers now.
Usefulness Rating: 3.4 out of 5.
