Purchase: I have an Arabian horse that I train for endurance rides. My problem was that I got major saddle slippage going up and down hills. I would literally be riding on the poor guy's neck after going down a steep hill. I was always getting off and making adjustments or hoping that when I went down a hill the saddle would slip back into place. The final straw was when he ended up with a sore back and halted my training. I decided I needed some professional help.
There wasn't a saddle and/or saddle pad combination that seemed to work. I went through 3 saddles before I finally found one that doesn't slip.
I ordered the Crest Ridge Ovation saddle after sending photographs of my horse to Debra. Just from looking at my horse's conformation from a picture, she immediately knew what problems I was having before I even told her. I was impressed and we discussed my fitting and options for a new saddle.
In October 2008, I believe I paid $1200 for the saddle and stirrups.
Likes: Well, I like that it fits and doesn't slip or cause a sore back, even after 50+ miles. But I also really like the center fire rigging. Once I got everything adjusted correctly, that saddle is locked down. I never feel like I am riding sideways.
Dislikes: I didn't like the stirrups that came with the saddle. They were too big/tall/bulky and hit my shin in a painful way. I just ordered some smaller stirrups and everything is great.
Quality: The saddle is comfortable enough to ride 50+ miles and not feel any sore spots. The saddle is sturdy and I definitely feel like I got what I paid for.
Summary: Crest Ridge's motto is "This One Fits" and it really does! Even though they tailor to gaited horses, a custom saddle is a custom saddle and when the manufacturer really understands the horse's conformation, you can't go wrong. I'm so happy I finally found a saddle that doesn't slip or leave my horse with a sore back.
