Category: All Purpose Saddles
Purchase: I bought it off E Bay . I paid $499 with all fittings, 2 girths and pad. In desperation I tried it on a mare so wide backed, no withers , barrel shaped shoulders, that nothing would fit her. Before getting this saddle she tried to bite me violently while being girthed , evaded being saddled. Bit my feet while I was in the saddle. Would not trot more than a few strides before stopping and pinning her ears. All other saddles slid too far forward as soon as she started working and to the side despite being cinched so tight that she could hardly breathe.
Likes: I had never seen a wintec up close and personal. I think it is lovely !! I honestly wouldn't know it wasn't leather! It is very well made. It is comfortable for me while riding and the seat is nice as it keeps you secure with it's " grippy" feel. I have been using it daily on my mare for 3 weeks now. The change in her was not immediate, but all the behaviors listed above are now gone. Once she realized it wasn't going to hurt her she changed almost at once. I like that you can use the " red and white" gullets from the other wintec saddles as well as the 3 extra wide ones that come with it. The gullets are not difficult to change and it takes just a couple of minutes. If you have a wide backed horse that nothing else seems to fit I would recommend this. I have been trying for 2 years to properly fit this mare and knowing I can change the gullet width as she slims and gets into shape is a great feeling.
Dislikes: There is nothing I don't like about it. While my long legs fit, the flaps could be a little more roomy, more forward ( i guess) and at first the wintec stirrup webbers were a bit stiff, but that has changed after daily use.
Quality: I owned a stubben english saddle for 20+ years and looking at this saddle I feel that it is top quality and certainly worth every penny.
Summary: I wouldn't trade this saddle for anything. The peace of mind I have in knowing it will accommodate my mare and her extreme width and changing shape and not cause her pain make it a dream come true.
Usefulness Rating: 2 out of 5.
